A new study has revealed the UK’s most popular holiday destinations, and which UK cities are looking for a holiday most. Using Google Keyword Planner, travel platform Hellotickets has analysed 2,566 search combinations across 77 UK cities.
They looked at search terms including ‘destination holiday’, ‘last minute holiday to’, ‘short holiday in’, ‘winter holiday in’ and ‘summer holidays in’ to determine the results.
The team then looked at the total monthly average searches in each location and compared the results with its population. Researchers then calculated the monthly average searches per 100,000 people.
Surprisingly popular holiday destinations such as France and Portugal didn’t make the top five.
Spain, which is normally the most popular holiday destination for older Brits, came in tenth place.
Meanwhile, Turkey is the UK’s favourite destination and received an average of 27,129 Google searches per month.
The likes of Istanbul, Dalaman, Bodrum and Marmaris are popular places to go and visit in the country with many airlines flying there from the UK. British Airways, easyJet, Jet2 and Turkish Airlines are just some of the airlines which go to Turkey.
In particular, easyJet flies to three locations in the country including Antalya, Bodrum and Dalaman. The low-cost airline does travel to other parts of Turkey from the UK but these are stopover flights.
For those who are looking for some winter sun, travellers can fly to the capital Antalya from just £17 with easyJet. Even though these prices are in January holidaymakers can still expect high temperatures of 15°.
Despite Antalya being the fifth most populated city in the country which has stunning beaches and a beautiful harbour travellers can visit.
Jorge Díaz Largo, CEO and Founder of Hellotickets, said: “For Brits wanting to keep their costs low, Turkey offers a relatively inexpensive holiday experience, from flights and accommodation to food and activities.
“Compared to the UK, a three-course meal for two in a mid-range restaurant in the Turkish capital costs almost a quarter of what it does in London.
“Cape Verde is also extremely popular due to its warm, sunny climate throughout the year, making it an attractive escape from the often chilly and wet UK weather.”
