What do the cast get up to when off the show? (Picture: Channel 4)

Gogglebox, Channel 4’s hit show is returning tonight, delighting fans across the nation.

The show, which focuses on everyday families and friends reacting to the week’s telly, has become a nationwide favourite, spawning a remake in the US and making household names out of some of the original cast, including TV presenter Scarlett Moffatt.

While the cast spends a lot of time getting paid to watch the last weeks’ worth of television, many of them still have day jobs to go to.

So, what do the Gogglebox cast members do for work?

Surprisingly, the cast of Gogglebox aren’t sat on their sofas 24/7.

Many of them do have careers outside of the show.

Here’s what they do…

The Siddiqui family

Baasit, 37, Umar, 44, and their dad Sid, 76, have been on the show since it first started airing in 2013.

The family, who come from Derby, are hugely popular with viewers.

Baasit works as an IT teacher, which he has done since 2007, according to Heart.

Umar has worked in the NHS as a Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology at the Royal Derby Hospital for close to 17 years.

Family patriarch Sid is a retired engineer who previously worked for the NHS for 37 years.

Giles and Mary

Married couple Giles and Mary joined the show in 2015 and have become breakout favourites ever since.

The quirky couple are known for their odd sayings and calling each other ‘nutty.’

Giles is an artist and Mary is a writer for The Spectator.

Mary previously wrote about her newfound fame through the show in The Spectator, saying: ‘The public’s reaction is entirely benign. People approach me, their faces wreathed in smiles. “You’re Mary from Gogglebox, aren’t you? I just want to say – your husband makes us laugh.”’

Jenny and Lee

Best friend’s Jenny and Lee are firm fan-favourites (Picture: Twitter/leegogglebox)

Jenny, 67, and Lee, 54, best friends from Hull, delight viewers each week with their banter and their sayings.

The pair have been best friends for more than two decades, first meeting when Jenny was the landlady of a pub called The Crown Inn in Paull, and Lee was a regular.

It’s not known what the pair do now, except entertain viewers each week from Lee’s caravan in Hull. 

The Malones

The Malones from Manchester used to be made up of Dad Tom, Mum Julie and sons Tom Jr and Shaun.

The family also have other children – Vanessa and Lee – but they don’t appear on the show as regularly.

Tom Jr is a freelance model and street-dance choreographer and after seven years on the show, he has now left the cast to pursue other TV projects.

Tom Senior is a lorry driver and Julie is a receptionist and homemaker.

As for the kids, while Shaun used to be a stage actor in Billy Elliott until he turned to sport, coaching Manchester United’s Under-16s Ability Counts football team.

The Plummers

The Bristolian brothers, Tremaine, Twaine and Tristan, were a later addition to the show, joining in the eighth season.

Football runs big in the family: Tristan is a winger for Hereford FC and Twaine plays for Bradford Town.

Tremaine is a chef.

Ellie and Izzi

Blonde Ellie, 31, and her younger sister Izzi, 28, have made a name for themselves appearing on the show – the duo have developed a large social media following.

Ellie has worked as a hairdresser, and she has an Instagram page about her work with hair styling.

It is not known what Izzi does, although she has two children which could keep her busy.

David and Shirley

The married couple from Wales joined Gogglebox in 2015.

They have been together for over 40 years.

When they are not filming, David is a cleaner in a factory and Shirley works in retail.

Gogglebox airs on Channel 4 every Friday at 9pm.
