Virgin Media O2 has installed the UK’s first 5G standalone small cells, delivering enhanced urban mobile connectivity.
The deployment, in central Birmingham, targets some of the city’s busiest areas and has already demonstrated impressive results.
Initial performance data reveals enhanced mobile internet experiences for customers, with speeds reaching up to 300Mbps through the implementation of MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology. The deployment was accomplished through a partnership with Ontix and Alpha Wireless.
Unlike conventional mobile towers that can be visually intrusive, these small cells have been strategically and discreetly integrated into existing street furniture. The installation focuses particularly on high-demand areas in Birmingham’s city centre, known for its bustling business district and vibrant nightlife.
The deployment represents a significant achievement for Virgin Media O2, which already maintains the country’s largest small cell network. What sets this particular installation apart is the use of 5G standalone technology—a first for small cells in the UK.

This development builds upon Virgin Media O2’s earlier rollout of its 5G standalone network this year, which the company offers to customers without additional charges. The network has since expanded significantly, now serving more than 300 towns and cities across Britain.
Chris Hudson, West Midlands 5G Connectivity Director, commented: “I am delighted to see further investment by Virgin Media O2 in Birmingham with the introduction of new 5G standalone small cells in the city centre.
“Fast and reliable connectivity in our region is critical for both residents and businesses. Broad Street and Fleet Street are two of the busiest areas in our brilliant city, and these discreet masts will ensure visitors and residents across the West Midlands enjoy a high-quality connectivity experience.”
The initiative forms part of Virgin Media O2’s ambitious network upgrade strategy, backed by a daily investment of £2 million to future-proof its mobile infrastructure. This investment appears timely, as the operator reported a 26% increase in mobile data consumption among O2 customers in 2023.
Last year, a report found that 5G standalone deployments were lagging behind expectations. Virgin Media O2’s deployment could suggest that a bit more momentum is starting to build.
