The USA isn’t known for its walkable neighbourhoods. Around nine in 10 households own a car, according to statistics released in 2022. In the UK, over 20 percent of households don’t have a car.
Analysis undertaken by researchers at Virginia Tech and Rutgers University found that just 12 percent of trips in the USA are taken on foot.
Despite this, the country does have some cities that are easy to explore as a pedestrian. A new study from the team at Preply has found the USA’s most walkable cities.
The team used Tripadvisor data to find how long it would take tourists to walk between each city’s five top attractions.
So which American city is the most walkable in the country?
Chicago is the USA’s most walkable city with its top five attractions all within 28 minutes of each other on foot.
Lonely Planet has described Chicago as a city that “will blow you away” and it’s one of America’s top holiday destinations.
The ‘Windy City’’s top attraction on Tripadvisor is The Art Institute of Chicago which one tourist described as beautiful.
They said: “Beautiful, very well organised and laid out.” Another visitor said: “The best! This is a wonderful experience.”
Other top attractions in Chicago include Millennium Park and the Museum of Science and Industry.
For a scenic walking route, check out the city’s Magnificent Mile which has more than 450 shops on the banks of the Chicago River.
