If you’re seeking a picturesque autumn escape, one of the UK’s most enchanting cities could be your perfect destination.

Language experts at Preply have analysed Britain’s favourite city breaks and identified the most pedestrian-friendly locations. Another captivating city takes second place, but according to Preply’s analysis, York emerges as the nation’s third most walkable city with all top five attractions within a 48-minute stroll.

York, steeped in Roman history, presents an iconic skyline dominated by the grand 13th-century Minster. It’s a walker’s paradise, boasting a beautiful car-free zone ideal for leisurely exploration.

Among its cobbled streets, The Shambles stands out, filled with unique shops.

One Tripadvisor reviewer under ‘Iarke/Burgess’ said: “What a beautiful quaint place. This is full of charm and atmosphere. Lovely little shops with all sorts of goods.”

And ‘Happywanderer1960’ was equally smitten, they said: “Stunning street with fantastic stalls and shops with everything for everybody. All in all, fantastic shops and stalls.”

Chocoholics can get their fix too as York isn’t just rich in history it’s also where some of the UK’s most beloved chocolate brands originated such as KitKats and chocolate oranges.

Nowadays, a plethora of boutique shops offer chocolate delights, and tourists will be spoilt for choice when it comes to finding a cosy cafe for a hot chocolate.

A visit to the National Railway Museum or the historic York Minster is a must for any tourist. The York Castle Museum provides a peek into history with an array of family-friendly activities.

York, less than two hours from London and easily accessible from Edinburgh, is just a stone’s throw away from Leeds. A National Trust property there is touted as one of the UK’s prime spots to savour the autumn season.
