Ukraine‘s gun-wielding robot has forced Russian soldiers into retreat in Kursk as Kyiv boasts that the “enemy was destroyed” in the fighting.

Named ‘The Fury’, the robot was developed by Ukrainians in May, and has now reportedly come out on top on the battlefield.

The 1st Detachment of the 8th Special Purpose Regiment in Ukraine‘s army said on social media: “The result: part of the enemy was destroyed, the rest fled.

“The [robot] received several hits from RPGs and FPVs…but persevered, completed the mission and returned to recovery.”

The Fury is a four-wheeled vehicle that looks like a mini-tank with a small remote-controlled machine gun turret on top.

It is also equipped with a radio for communication and video cameras.

Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s innovation minister, said in May: “The Fury robot attacks the Russian positions and covers our defenders during the assault.

“The military liked that it was easy to control, and noted the robot’s high level of radio and video communication, as well as its good sight and automatic fire both day and night.”

Russian forces have also developed armed robots, according to reports.

Vehicles like this often struggle with uneven terrain and can be thwarted by craters, potholes and fallen objects.

The developers behind The Fury have tried to counter this by prioritising mobility, giving it big wheels and a low centre of gravity and a high chassis.

Its triumph over Russian soldiers took place in the village of Volfino, close to the border with Ukraine.

Ukraine launched its surprise attacks into the Kursk region of Russia in August, taking control of approximately 100 villages.

The attack was launched to try and deal a blow to Vladimir Putin‘s war machine and halt Russia‘s advances in the east of Ukraine.

Moscow’s forces are still making gains in parts of the east of Ukraine, but Kyiv’s President Volodymyr Zelensky says 40,000 Russian soldiers have been diverted to Kursk because of the incursion.

He said: “A separate issue was the operation in the Kursk region. We have already managed to divert about 40,000 Russian troops to this area. Our actions go on.”
