Britons have been urged to leave more time to travel to Gatwick and Heathrow airports this weekend due to roadworks on the M25.

The M25 is due to close between junctions 10 and 11 from 9pm on Friday, March 15 until 6am on Monday, March 18.

The roadworks are likely to lead to “major disruption” and could cause chaos for British holidaymakers travelling to Gatwick or Heathrow Airport this weekend.

Matthew Harwood, lifestyle expert at Confused.com travel insurance, said: “Road works affecting the M25 could have major disruptions to those flying in and out of London’s busiest airports next week.

“So those who need to travel to Gatwick and Heathrow are urged to plan ahead. As motorists are being encouraged to consider alternative routes during this time, this could mean that these also become heavily congested as a result.

“So finding other means of transport, such as train services which go directly into the airport terminal, could be the best option.

“But travellers should still allow themselves plenty of time to get to airports, as it’s likely that the whole transport network will face major delays.

“As the disruptions aren’t anything to do with airlines or airports themselves, it’s unlikely that compensation will be offered to those who miss their flights.

“So in this instance, giving yourself extra time could mean you don’t start your trip off on the wrong foot.”

Jonathan Wade, National Highways project lead, has urged Britons to only use the M25 if their journey is “absolutely necessary”.

There is likely to be heavy congestion on route diversions. Gatwick Airport has advised customers to leave extra time to travel to the airport or to take the train.
