A new study has revealed the top bucket-list landmarks Brits want to visit this half-term holiday and the hefty price tag that comes with ticking off these iconic destinations.

The research, carried out by travel experts at Desert Safari Dubai Tours & Tickets, used Google search data to rank the most popular landmarks worldwide. The report also highlights the best ways to beat the crowds and manage travel costs during this half-term break.

Niagara Falls Tops the List

Niagara Falls emerged as the number one destination for Brits, with a staggering 160,661 monthly Google searches – over 1,000% higher than the average bucket list location. The iconic waterfalls, which straddle the border between Canada and the US, attract over 12 million visitors annually. While the falls themselves are free to visit, getting there is anything but cheap. Return flights from the UK start at £1,166 per adult, and with peak season inflating accommodation and travel costs, a family trip to this natural wonder may stretch the budget.

Eiffel Tower and Alcatraz: Affordable Icons, But Plan Ahead

In second place, Paris’s Eiffel Tower sees 90,109 searches a month, making it the most visited paid landmark on the list. Luckily for British travellers, it’s also one of the most affordable, with flights to Paris available for as little as £30. Tickets to ascend the Eiffel Tower cost around £22, making the total spend per person a reasonable £52.46. However, searches for the landmark peak in June, so visiting during the quieter half-term holiday could save both money and hassle.

Alcatraz Island, the former maximum-security prison off the coast of San Francisco, is another top bucket list destination for Brits, ranking third with 88,423 searches per month. The fascination with true crime stories has made this a popular spot, and visitors can explore the cell house where some of history’s most infamous criminals were incarcerated. While flights and tickets can set tourists back approximately £543.77, the long journey means additional expenses for hotels, food, and transport can quickly add up.

The Northern Lights and Central Park: Natural Wonders with Hefty Travel Costs

One of the more awe-inspiring natural phenomena on Brits’ bucket lists is the Northern Lights, which came in fifth place. With 67,215 searches a month, many Brits dream of witnessing this magical display in the Arctic Circle. Norway is a popular spot for viewing, with flights costing as little as £44 per adult, although guided tours to maximise your chance of a sighting will increase the overall cost.

Closer to home, Central Park in New York ranked fourth, with 73,454 searches per month. While the park itself is free to visit, the average cost of flights from the UK and accommodation brings the total cost to an eye-watering £1,574.

Half-Term Savings Tips from the Experts

Magdalena Petrusic, a travel expert from Desert Safari Dubai Tours & Tickets, offered her advice on how Brits can make the most of their half-term holiday without breaking the bank:
“These iconic landmarks are on many Brits’ bucket lists, and for good reason. However, that can mean getting to see them in person, unobstructed by swathes of other tourists, can be a challenge. Booking trips during the October half-term can help reduce flight and accommodation costs, as this is a less crowded time for many of these attractions.”

Petrusic also recommended combining multiple destinations into one trip to save on flights. “Rather than taking several long-haul trips, Brits could consider visiting multiple landmarks on one extended holiday, reducing the total travel expense,” she added.

Hidden Gems and Less Crowded Destinations

For those seeking a quieter and more budget-friendly option, Petrusic highlighted some under-the-radar destinations:
“The Moai Statues on Easter Island, the stunning Santorini Cliffs, and Turkey’s ancient Library of Celsus are all breathtaking landmarks that receive far fewer searches and visitors, making them more peaceful – and often more affordable – alternatives.”

As families gear up for their half-term adventures, it’s clear that while some bucket-list trips may come with a high price tag, smart planning and timing can make all the difference in creating an unforgettable, budget-friendly holiday experience.
