Historically, Brits have been better known for consuming copious amounts of wine than producing it. But while once something that wine snobs would jeer and turn their noses up at, English wine has really come into its own in recent years. So much so, in fact, that one vineyard has just been named one of the best in the entire world.

The Gusbourne estate in Kent has ranked 50th in the World’s Best Vineyards 2024. The annual list recognises the ‘finest vineyards across the globe’, taking note of their landscapes, history, restaurants, tours and other experiences they have on offer. The winners ‘exemplify excellence, innovation and a commitment to quality, guiding wine enthusiasts to explore both hidden gems and renowned estates’.

Gusbourne is renowned for its sparkling wines and also happens to be the only three-time winner of the International Wine and Spirit Competition English Wine Producer of the Year. It offers a picnic experience with a bottle of bubbly and a hamper of local cheese and charcuterie. Visitors can also stop by its tasting room, The Nest, to sample the fizzy nectar alongside a seasonal food menu.

So, consider this your sign to give British wine another go. Find more outstanding producers of the stuff with Time Out’s list of the best vineyards in the UK
