Hidden in the northeast of England, it is Northumberland’s small fishing village that houses one of the country’s best beaches.
Low Newton-by-the-Sea is one of the country’s hidden gems. Where the 4.5-star rated beach welcomes barely any visitors, it provides the perfect experience for a quiet escape to the sea.

Great for paddling, swimming (if brave! – it was cold!) and building sandcastles – perfect for children. Park at the top of the hill and walk down – fun for all the family.”
The remote beach offers an outstanding view of the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle – the village’s historic landmark. The surrounding area makes a great picnic spot, ideal for a family day out.
The picturesque scenes surrounding the beach make it a great option for windsurfing. With surf shops around, visitors can hire suits and boards and explore the Northumberland coastline, which the beach sits on.
Most of the village, which is comprised of a beach, an open-ended grass square and cream-washed cottages, is completely owned by the National Trust – Europe’s biggest conservation charity.
The area is also renowned for bird watching, famous for the Newton Pool Bird Reserve. There are plenty of birds to look out for on Newton Pool coastal walk, so a pair of binoculars is recommended for the best experience.
The full trail is around one mile and takes between 30 and 40 minutes to complete; it is dog-friendly for “responsible owners”, and a section of the trail is wheelchair accessible.
However, it is important to note that some of the pavements lead into uneven paths as well as the trail, including one steep hill and steps.
For those wanting something that involves less movement, the village also houses a tiny microbrewery. The Ship’s Inn is the village’s spot for a relaxing lunch that has been open since the 18th century.
This coastal village, though small in size, is full of things to do for visitors of all ages. Families can enjoy safe, sandy beaches perfect for swimming and sunbathing, while nature lovers can explore scenic landscapes.
Boasting a selection of local shops and restaurants as well as its quiet beach, Low Newton-by-the-Sea is a tranquil haven.
