Cardiff, in Wales, was named in 2023 as one of the top cities to visit in the UK.

The Welsh capital is known for its nightlife and exciting neighbourhoods. The city has much to offer for everyone, from a diverse food scene to independent shops.

Moreover, it is just a stone throw’s away from some of the best beaches in southern Wales, including Whitmore Bay, which Gavin and Stacey fans will surely know as the filming location of Marco’s Cafe, and Bendricks Beach.

Cardiff, one of the wettest cities in the UK, offers a bright range of things to do and places to see.

It is famous for being the birthplace of author Roald Dahl and is the UK’s 11th largest city.

An estimated 18 million tourists visit Cardiff every year and if you’re looking for somewhere new to visit in the UK, it’s a great place to visit for a weekend away.

While you’re there, browsing the Victorian arcades is a must-do, these independent boutique shops are where you can find a souvenir to remember your trip by. One-of-a-kind sellers occupy these shops, offering items such as rare books, baked goods and handmade treasures.

To learn about the history of the area, take a trip to Cardiff castle. This Norman stronghold, founded by William the Conqueror is now most famous for its Victorian apartments. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Wales and allows its visitors a unique opportunity to explore almost 2000 years of history.

For those looking to experience the city by bike, Time Out has named cycling around Cardiff Bay as one of the best things to do in the seaside area. The bay is Europe’s largest waterfront development and has plenty of bars, shops and cafes to stop off at if you want to take a break by the water.

Another popular spot amongst nature lovers is Bute Park. The park and arboretum is a large space and one of the biggest urban parks in Wales. It is home to a range of flowers, wildlife, sculptures and fitness equipment.

One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “I have been visiting Cardiff for years and I never knew that this place existed. It is so peaceful there that you wouldn’t know you are so close to the city centre. It really is Cardiff’s hidden gem, I will definitely be going there again.”
