There are 1.4 million lakes across the world that measure over 0.2 square miles and over 60 percent of them are in Canada.

Canada has 879,800 lakes, making it the country with the most lakes in the world and home to Lake Superior.

Located in the Canadian province of Ontario, Lake Superior measures a surface area of 82,103 square kilometres and has a water volume of 12,070 kilometres cubed.

This makes it the planet’s largest lake in the world by surface area and the third-largest lake by volume. It also holds 10 percent of the world’s surface freshwater.

Lake Superior is part of the five Great Lakes, large interconnected freshwater lakes spanning Canada and the United States. Along with Lake Superior, the group is made up of Lake Ontario, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie.

However, the largest lake that is entirely within Canada is The Great Bear Lake in Northwest Territories. It has a surface area of 31,153 square kilometres and has a water volume of 2,234 kilometres cubed.

Canada’s lakes are known as some of the world’s most beautiful because of the landscape. Most of them are formed in the mountains and areas with glaciation. The glaciers in the area cause the rock faces to grind into a fine powder, which floats into the lakes, reflecting the light around it and creating remarkable colours.

Not only they are a great view, but plenty are also great to swim in, such as the ones in the Banff National Park, where people can enjoy swimming and water-related activities such as fishing and rafting.

Russia is the country with the second most lakes. However, there is a huge difference in the number of lakes it has compared to Canada. Russia has 201,200 lakes, meaning Canada has four times the number of lakes.

In fact, amongst the 10 countries with the most amount of lakes, if you were to combine the total of the nine countries following Canada in this ranking, the number of lakes would still be less than Canada’s total.

The nine countries along with Canada with the most lakes in the world are Russia, Finland, the United States, China, Sweden, Brazil, Norway, Argentina and Kazakhstan. The number of lakes in those countries combined is 605,000.
