People are being encouraged to visit a pilot market in Loughborough which aims to support young traders with budding businesses.

Loughborough KickStart Market will take place for the first time on Sunday May 26 between 10am-4pm and will provide an opportunity for young traders to try their hand at being a market trader.

The new market is being organised by Charnwood Borough Council’s Market Team.

A variety of stalls are already registered to take part in the small event offering homemade bakes, baby clothes, hats and accessories, plants, toys and jewellery.

In addition, there will be a range of food outlets and entertainment in the town such as music performances.

Cllr Jennifer Tillotson, lead member for economic development, regeneration and town centres said: “This is the first time the Council has held a market of this kind which focuses on supporting young people and their new businesses.

“We hope residents and visitors will pop along to show their support for the young traders and see the variety of products and services on offer.

“There will be performances from local people throughout the day as well as a range of food stalls so there will be a nice atmosphere in the town centre.

“It has been great to see the response from young people so far but there’s still room for more to sign up and get involved. If you have a small business which you are keen to promote or products you want to sell, please do get in touch with the markets team and think about joining us!”

Loughborough Kickstart Market is for people aged 16-30, interested in either becoming a market trader or trying out running a stall to support their new businesses. Students in the local area can also sign-up for a stall to sell wares, display their work or gather feedback on their business ideas.

There will be no charge to host a market stall at Loughborough Kickstart, but spaces must be booked in advance.

The Council has arranged public liability insurance for young traders. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Young people interested in taking part by either hosting a market stall or performing in the town can find out more and book a free stall by contacting the Markets Team on markets@charnwood.gov.uk

It is hoped further Loughborough Kickstart Markets can be held in the future if the pilot proves popular.

Loughborough Markets’ Thursday and Saturday retail street markets are among the largest in the area and steeped in 800 years of history.

Every Friday, a Vintage and Collectors Market takes place in Loughborough and a micro-market in Shepshed. Both are growing in popularity. The Council is also bringing more and more specialist markets to the heart of Loughborough.
