AWARD-winning charity Sport Aberdeen is ecstatic that its Tullos Swimming Pool venue recently achieved a significant accreditation.
The certificate confirmed Tullos Swimming Pool’s completion of The Active Standard (TAS) quality framework, specifically and exclusively as part of the ukactive UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funded musculoskeletal (MSK) hubs pilot.
The pilot aims to transform leisure centres, swimming pools and gyms into MSK health hubs, showing how the fitness and leisure industries can work together to reduce the pressure on the NHS.
The opportunity for Sport Aberdeen to apply for the accreditation was presented when the Good Boost aqua rehabilitation programme was launched at Tullos Swimming Pool. Good Boost sessions support participants with MSK conditions to exercise by giving each a waterproof tablet-computer which creates a tailored and personalised therapeutic aquatic exercise programme, helping with mobility, balance and fitness.
The certificate demonstrates that Tullos Swimming Pool has fully met the required compliance expectations as part of this UKRI funded pilot. The certificate is valid until 11 April 2025, at which point the funded pilot ends. ukactive states that ‘MSK conditions are the primary cause of disability among older adults, as more than 20 million people in the UK experience related problems, such as arthritis, chronic pain, or a knee replacement.’
The MSK health hubs – including Tullos Swimming Pool – will provide exercise, rehabilitation and wellbeing support to help people maintain mobility, reduce pain, and improve the health of patients before and after surgery.
David Selkirk, Director of Community Leisure Operations, said: “We are pleased that Tullos Swimming Pool has achieved The Active Standard (TAS) quality framework and this is testament to a whole team of individuals from across the charity who were involved in making this happen.
“Since being the first provider in Scotland to launch the Good Boost aqua rehabilitation programme, our classes have welcomed over 1,100 attendees and they are currently fully subscribed.
“It is great for us to support more people with MSK conditions to exercise safely and we look forward to launching our Good Boost Land classes in June.”
