Barafundle Bay beach, a semi-remote, east-facing golden sandy cove surrounded by sand dunes and cliffs, is an absolute gem.
Only accessible by foot, the Welsh beach inspired the name of Carmarthenshire’s psychedelic folk band, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci’s third album in 1997.
Nestled between Stackpole Quay, a small pebble inlet, and Stackpole Head – a breezy outcrop leading to Broadhaven South, another top-notch beach – Barafundle Bay offers a tranquil sandy oasis.
Despite lacking practical facilities or trendy cafes serving oat milk flat whites, its sheer beauty makes up for it. Plus, it’s only a short walk from Stackpole Quay (where you can park and grab a drink) before descending on the sandy shores.
Barafundle Bay is part of the Stackpole Estate nature reserve, which is a rather secluded spot meaning it’s never as crowded as other Pembrokeshire beaches.
The golden sands and crystal blue sea are usually enjoyed by families, friends, and walkers on the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path who pause to admire the view but, be aware, there could be access issues.
The descent isn’t steep, but those with mobility issues may find it challenging to get down to the beach. However, visitors can not stop singing its praises.
One person on TripAdvisor recently compared Barafundle to something “like what you would find in Barbados” while another added: “I have travelled the world and have been lucky enough to see some heavenly beaches. This is up there.”
Barafundle Bay beach is consistently voted as one of the UK’s best beaches; in 2024, one reviewer said it’s a “lovely beach and worth the walk”.
Back in 2023, somebody else said the beach is a “stunning area of natural beauty” while in 2020, a reviewer noted: “This is a must-visit location; such a lovely spot.”
How to get to Barafundle Bay beach
Park up at Stackpole Quay car park (SA71 5LS), which is owned by the National Trust and is part of the Stackpole Estate, where you can grab a drink before walking 15 minutes to Barafundle Bay beach.
Alternatively, people can park at Broadhaven South car park (SA71 5DR) to walk along the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path to Barafundle Bay beach.
Nearby Barafundle Bay beach, The Stackpole Inn, a multi-award-winning pub once visited by Gordon Ramsay, is open for business and worth a visit.
The three-star hotel’s kitchen is headed up by chef Matt Waldron whose team offers up ever-changing local produce in line with the seasons.
