Dr Sam Gardner, Head of Climate Change & Sustainability for green energy company, ScottishPower, has joined the Board of Trustees for the UN Global Compact Network UK – part of the world’s largest global sustainability initiative.

The UN Global Compact Network UK works to support business to help advance the 17 goals and 169 targets set out in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – each addressing a specific aspect of sustainable development such as affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action.

The SDGs are a driving force in Iberdrola’s – ScottishPower’s parent company – business strategy and governance and are embedded in ScottishPower’s own Action 2030 Sustainable Development Strategy.

Building on ScottishPower’s longstanding commitment to the UN Global Compact Network UK,

Sam – a leading environmental campaigner and trusted voice across industry, academia and the public sector – will attend his first Board meeting in early October.

He said: “I’m honoured to join the Board of Trustees and contribute to this global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders working together to create the world we want, need and deserve.

“The UN Global Compact Network UK has a really important role to play to help businesses seize the opportunities and play their full part in building a sustainable future for all.”

“Thanks to our actions on climate and clean energy, backed by our commitments to our workforce and the communities we work alongside, we’re in a great position at ScottishPower to lead by example. We can show others the art of the possible – all the while looking at what we can learn to go further and faster on our own sustainability journey.

“By working together across the UN Global Compact Network UK, we can collectively progress not just the transition to cleaner and greener energy, but also help drive social and environmental change to create a brighter, greener and more prosperous future for everyone. I’m looking forward to getting to work with my fellow Trustees.”
