Ronnie O’Sullivan has crashed out at the quarter-final stage of the World Snooker Championship as Stuart Bingham progressed to the semi-finals following a thrilling contest at the Crucible.
After they ended the second session all square at 8-8, it was nip-and-tuck at 10-10 until Bingham won three frames in a row, with O’Sullivan missing a few key shots after an incident involving the crowd in the 21st frame, with the seven-time champion unhappy with fans entering the arena before a key shot.
In the other quarter-finals, which all finished today, Judd Trump was knocked out by Jak Jones in a major upset. The world No 2 never got into his stride with a series of shocking misses and Jones wrapped up the 13-9 victory with a century break. Qualifier Jones will now face 2015 champion Bingham in the semis.
On the other half of the draw, Kyren Wilson turned the screw on John Higgins with more high-scoring breaks to seal his place in the semi-finals with a 13-8 triumph. He will play David Gilbert, who reached the final four in the world championship for the first time in five years with a 13-8 win over Stephen Maguire.

Stuart Bingham, speaking to BBC Sport:
“I’ve had a little cry at the back there. Unbelievable!
“You know you can do it. It’s tough. You know what comes with it – there’ll be loads of media, got to get back and focus. Another three days here in the semi-finals.
“I’ve seen Kyren beat John so I’m the only one left who’s had their hands on the trophy. Jak will be a great battle the next three days.”

Ronnie O’Sullivan, speaking to BBC Sport:
“It’s just the way it goes. I’m actually really happy, feel I’m actually getting through the ball which is more important for me at this stage. Been a bit worrying couple of years so for me, not the win I’d have liked but that’s snooker, that’s the way it goes.
“Good luck to Stuart, he played a fantastic match and deserved his victory. I’m just pleased I competed, cueing OK, just a few errors here and there but on the whole not too bad.
“I was just coming here knowing it was going to be another difficult tournament, no one has any divine right to win any match. A lot can happen in the game of snooker and that’s just sport you know.”

Ronnie misses the yellow!
It wasn’t easy as it was close to the cushion, but you’d expect him to make it! And it’s on for Bingham.

Ronnie plays into position perfectly and nails that cushioned red into the pocket, left-handed!
He takes the pink and now it’s the colours. He’s within four points.

A few unideal tricky positional shots from Ronnie but a few super pots – red and pink – gets him to 52-30.
There’s one red on the cushion which will be the key here…

Bingham plays a lovely cannon to separate three reds… but then misses the most routine of pinks to the middle pocket!
He bowed his head early – did he change his mind of what type of shot to play?!
Either way, somehow, O’Sullivan is still in this match. And the balls are pretty decent.
52-0 as he comes to the table….

His safety doesn’t reach its target and he’s left a red over the middle pocket for Bingham!
The 2015 champion doesn’t miss and now he has a brilliant opportunity to win the match… it’s looking like curtains for Ronnie O’Sullivan’s quest for eight.
