A Caithness business group is calling on the next UK government to recognise the significant contribution of the far north to future growth, innovation and job creation.
Caithness Chamber of Commerce said the north Highlands was “fundamental to the nation’s transition to renewable power” and cited the fast-developing space, offshore wind and electricity transmission sectors as national assets.
It wants whichever party forms the next UK government – which looks increasingly likely to be Labour – to work with the business community to tackle unique local challenges to help grow the economy.
The Chamber group launched its own “Rally For Growth” manifesto during a business hustings event it hosted with candidates standing in the Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross constituency.
The document amplifies the national priorities outlined by the Scottish Chambers of Commerce network and highlights the opportunities and challenges for the north Highland region, it stated.
Members of the business community were able to submit questions to the candidates and speak to them directly during the event at the Pentland Hotel in Thurso on Wednesday. The group described the discussion as “dynamic and informative”.
A statement by the Caithness Chamber said: “The next UK government must partner with business to tackle the challenges and grow the economy. We are asking the next UK government to work closely with the business community to help deliver the most pro-growth policies to turbo-charge investment, innovation and job creation.
“The north Highland region is fundamental to the nation’s transition to renewable power and is at the cusp of transformational developments and opportunities. National assets such as space, offshore wind and significant electricity transmission infrastructure are being developed and planned in our region and off our shores.
“It is imperative that the next UK government acknowledges the unique needs of the north Highlands, considering the significant national assets it houses.”
It added that a comprehensive action plan was necessary by the new UK ministers to foster rural employment, provide suitable housing and healthcare, enhance transport connectivity, and support communities.
“It is crucial to ensure true progress and levelling up in collaboration with businesses, communities, and stakeholders. Whilst some of these are devolved issues, we believe UK government still has a duty and responsibility given this region’s national importance in the UK’s transition to net zero.”
Trudy Morris chief executive of Caithness Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are asking for our newly elected MP, whatever their political persuasion, to partner with us and advocate for these business and regional issues to ensure the north Highlands receives the recognition and priority it deserves, enabling business and community to realise the significant opportunities for empowering and transforming the north Highlands, ensuring it is not left behind.”
