Lee Carsley has been appointed as the caretaker manager for the duration of the current Nations League campaign which started in September and will end next month with a match against Ireland at Wembley.
The 50-year-old kicked off his tenure with back-to-back victories against Ireland and Finland but fell to an unexpected defeat at home against Greece last week, England’s first competitive defeat at Wembley within 90 minutes in four years.
The former Ireland international has been promoted from the England U21 job, with whom he won the Euros last year, but has been replaced as bookies’ favourite for the full time senior job following the latest international break.
Since the defeat to Greece, when asked whether he wants the job full time, Carsley has seemed to non committal as to whether he wants the job and has even been quoted as saying “hopefully I’ll be back with the U21s” once the Nations League campaign is complete.

Thomas Tuchel is the man to have replaced Carsley as odds on favourite to be named Southgate’s successor, with the German currently out of a job having left his role at Bayern Munich in the summer.
The 51-year-old has enjoyed managerial success at club level in the recent past, winning league titles in France and Germany, as well as lifting the Champions League trophy with Chelsea in 2021.
Pep Guardiola’s current contract is coming to an end at Manchester City at the end of the season, sparking rumours of his potential departure from the Etihad, with the potential of linking up with the England team in the summer to take over as manager.
The Spaniard, regarded by many to be the best manager in the world, has admitted his interest in managing internationally in the past, but talk of the Man City boss becoming the next England manager at 8/1 could be premature.
None of the top three in the odds list for the next England manager are English, but fourth and fifth on the list are the former Brighton and Chelsea boss Graham Potter also at 8/1 who has been without a job since his Stamford Bridge sacking in April last year, and current Newcastle manager Eddie Howe at 10/1.
