Hi,

Not strictly a business question but I would appreciate some outside and impartial advice on a question I’m currently contending with.

I have lived abroad for the past 5 years and am looking to move back to the UK with the target to start a business but I’m finding it difficult to decide where to base myself as I have the unique opportunity to basically set up anywhere.

I’ve done my research to establish options based on business case – customer base, competition etc. etc. But still find myself torn between two main options.

1) Somewhere i’d like to live in the long-term but have no in-depth knowledge of having only visited a couple of times. I won’t have an established network of friends and family. So will really be starting from scratch. There’s slightly more business competition there but it is also a bigger city and larger population.

2) Somewhere I’m from, but I’m less attracted to living there in the long-term. I have an in-depth knowledge of the area and have a network of friends and family. There is less business competition but a slightly smaller population.

I’m drawn to option 2 because it feels more within my comfort zone. I can visualise how I would go about starting and operating a business there whereas with option 1 it’s much less clear in my mind. Option 1 will be a bigger challenge but is much more of the sort of place I would like to live and buy a house once I an afford it.

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
