Meghan Markle’s new lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard has suffered a major setback after its trademark was rejected ahead of its official launch.
The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) rejected its trademark application as businesses cannot operate using the names of real places, The Telegraph reports.
American Riviera is often used to refer to Santa Barbara, California, where the Duchess of Sussex lives with her husband Prince Harry and their two children.
News of the setback comes as Prince William returned to work sporting a stubble on a visit to a homelessness exhibition in his first official engagement since the summer break.
William first revealed the rugged look in a surprise video with Kate last month as they congratulated Team GB on their Olympic success.
The markedly more casual look sparked controversy online, with some royal fans pleading with him to keep the stubble while others sarcastically saying he looked as if he was in “vacation mode”.
Prince William returns to work with new look
The Prince of Wales thanked artists for taking part in a groundbreaking homelessness exhibition as he sported his summer beard in public for the first time.
William debuted his new look in an online video with his wife Kate in August, when they praised the achievements of the nation’s athletes after the Paris Olympics.
The stubble was still in place as he toured Homelessness: Reframed, an exhibition that aims to give a fresh perspective on the issue, with sculptures, photographs and everyday objects given a new life by artists who may have slept rough.
William’s Homewards project, which aims to develop a blueprint for eradicating homelessness in all its forms, is the driving force behind the art exhibition which opened at the Saatchi Gallery in London in August.
The beard of the future King, who turned 42 in June, had flecks of grey and looked neatly trimmed to the same length as in his video appearance last month.

New bill enables Crown Estate to invest more in green energy – recap
Consisting of assets owned by the royal family, the Crown Estate is made up of large areas of land in the UK. It serves several purposes, including paying the Sovereign Grant, which funds the king’s official duties.
Now, the previous 1961 law governing the estate has been updated for “the 21st century” and with the public good mind.
Lord Livermore said: “The purpose of this Bill is to bring legislation governing the Crown Estate into the 21st century.
“Existing limitations on the Crown Estate’s powers have meant it has had to generate capital for its investment by selling its assets. That is neither desirable nor sustainable.
“And under current legislation, the Crown Estate is constrained in its ability to support sustainable projects and to preserve our heritage for generations to come.
“These are the reasons why this Bill is necessary and why the Crown Estate has asked successive governments for these reforms.”

Windy welcome for Camilla as she visits allotment on air base
The Queen enthused about homegrown produce when she met RAF families who have transformed a corner of an Air Force base into a smallholding.
Camilla visited RAF Leeming where bees and chickens are kept and vegetables grown on an allotment – all a stone’s throw from where jet fighters land.
She arrived in blustery, sunny conditions which whipped up her hair as she was greeted by a guard of honour after her plane touched down at the base in North Yorkshire.
As she toured the wellness project, which the servicemen and women say provides them with a haven away from their military duties, Camilla told one family “eating fresh eggs, they always taste much better.”

Camilla’s son launches royal cooking book
Queen Camilla and her former husband Andrew Parker Bowles were all smiles on Thursday night as they came together to celebrate the launch of their son’s royal cookbook.
Attendees at The Audley pub in Mayfair ate Scotch eggs and Coronation chicken sandwiches, and ditched pints of lager in favour of chilled negronis and glasses of crisp white wine.
The food critic’s latest book, Cooking and The Crown: Royal Recipes From Queen Victoria To King Charles III, will launch on September 26.
It will feature some iconic recipes eaten by the royal family since the 19th century including Queen Camilla’s porridge, George V’s curry, the King’s wet martini and Bombe Glacée Princess Elizabeth.
Guests poured over recipes while waiting for Tom to sign their copy. During his speech, the food critic gave a heartfelt thanks to King Charles and Camilla for their support while working on the recipes.

Society fixer disqualified over £200k meant for King’s Foundation
A society fixer has been disqualified by the charity watchdog after almost £200,000 in donations meant for the King’s Foundation were transferred to his private company’s bank account.
Michael Wynne-Parker, who was a trustee of the Mahfouz Foundation, has been deemed unfit to serve as a charity trustee and disqualified from holding a senior management position or trustee role in any charity for 12 years.
Stories about Mr Wynne-Parker, 78, accuse him of offering a cash for access deal to meet Charles. The charity watchdog began looking into concerns about the charity in 2021, including if a series of payments received from donors were used as intended and the trustees’ overall management and administration of the charity.
Its investigation followed media reports alleging donations from Russian banker Dmitry Leus intended for the King’s Foundation, were instead paid to The Mahfouz Foundation and that some of these funds were then transferred elsewhere.
The regulator’s probe found trustees had allowed the Mahfouz Foundation’s bank account to be “primarily used as a conduit” to transfer funds on behalf of third parties, including deposits into the charity’s bank accounts that donors thought were going directly to the King’s Foundation.
A total of £193,730 of the donations intended for the King’s Foundation were identified as having been transferred from the charity’s bank account to Mr Wynne-Parker’s private company’s bank account – a transaction the watchdog said was authorised by the trustees.

The unseen letter that shows Harry may find it hard to escape a lifetime of unhappiness
A friend was said to have suggested he might even perform “very low-key royal duties” to rebuild public trust and help out with the family’s dwindling personnel problem.
However, rumours of this “Comeback Campaign” were swiftly rebutted by other sources close to the Duke of Sussex who insist he has “no interest” in returning home, nor resuming royal duties.
As rumours swirl of Prince Harry’s ‘comeback campaign’, royal history and tradition tell us that there is only one path available to him – and possibly one person who can now bridge the divide between him and his brother.

Queen jokes dancers ‘showed her up’ during visit to the English National Ballet
The Queen joked about her ballet skills and that she had been “showed up” by dancers, during a visit to the English National Ballet (ENB).
Camilla smiled as she watched dancers rehearse for their upcoming production of the Nutcracker during the visit to the company’s Mulryan Centre for Dance in east London on Thursday.
The Queen wore a light blue long-sleeved dress with a gold ballerina brooch and spoke about her love of dance throughout the visit with performers, tutors and the company’s directors.
“I’ve got my tap shoes, and so I’m happy,” she remarked while watching one of the practices.
