London has been named Europe’s top city for life sciences and third globally in a new report from MedCity.
According to the cluster organisation focussed health technology, London was given the highest rank in Europe for its contributions to life sciences, beating out the likes of Amsterdam, Munich and Paris.
The group’s Global Cities Comparison Report examined the research innovation, talent ecosystem and the investment and business environments of major cities. According to MedCity, London stands out, due to its high concentration of clinics, clinical trial participant recruitment and highly supportive regulatory system.
London is home to more than 35 biomedical research centres and benefits from a truly diverse population that allows for more expansive trials.
“‘London’s Offer for Life Sciences’ highlights everything that makes the city stand out. Its world-class institutions, thriving research clusters, skilled workforce, and strong connections locally and internationally,” said MedCity CEO and life sciences director at London and Partners Dr Angela Kukula.
“Our goal is to make it easy for anyone interested in London’s life sciences sector — from investors to innovators — to find the information they need. This is just the start and we look forward to growing this resource with ongoing support from our key partners.”
The startup investment scene in the UK capital also contributes significantly to the success of the sector. Recent funding rounds for life science firms based in the city include clinical IT system provider Semble and women’s health tracking app Flo.
“Our world-beating life sciences industry is a key pillar of London’s economy, creating thousands of highly-skilled jobs, contributing billions of pounds to our economy, and improving our healthcare system, as we continue building a better and more prosperous London for everyone,” said Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.
As well as topping Europe, The UK capital was named the number three life science hub in the world, behind Boston and New York.
