Mayor Steve Rotheram said the Liverpool City Region is “leading the way in the UK’s Artificial Intelligence revolution” after it was announced that 1,000 new tech jobs are coming to the area.

On Sunday the ECHO exclusively revealed that US-based Kyndryl – the world’s largest IT infrastructure services provider – would be establishing a new technology hub in the Liverpool City Region, with 1,000 new jobs being created over the next three years.

The news formed part of a wider announcement from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, which stated that AI will be “unleashed” across the UK in a bid to “help turbocharge growth and boost living standards”. Speaking about the jobs in our region, Sir Keir said: “I promised the ECHO that I would turbocharge this great region, and here is the proof. Working hand in hand with Mayor Steve Rotheram, today’s announcement shows how Labour in power is delivering for working people.”

Now Mayor Rotheram, who met with bosses from the IT firm during a recent trip to New York, has welcomed the jobs boost. He said: “This is fantastic news for our region and a real testament to what we can achieve when local ambition is matched by national support to help attract international investment. I’m really glad that we’ve been able to attract Kyndryl to our area, having met with them on our trade mission to New York last year.

“This announcement shows how, together with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his government, we’re delivering real, tangible change for working people across our communities. With 1,000 new AI jobs coming to the Liverpool City Region over the next 3 years, we’re not just creating opportunities for today but laying the foundations for the jobs of the future.

Mayor Rotheram, who recently hosted a major AI summit in Liverpool, added: “As a region with a proud history of innovation we’re ready to seize the opportunities that AI and digital technology can bring—not just to boost our economy but to improve lives, develop skills, tackle inequality, and ensure no one is left behind. This is the Liverpool City Region leading the way in the UK’s AI revolution.”

In a major speech at University College London on Monday, the Prime Minister said he wanted to make the United Kingdom an ‘artificial intelligence superpower’. Sir Keir added: “We’re going to make the breakthroughs, we’re going to create the wealth, and we’re going to make AI work for everyone in our country.”
