The UK is continuing to advise against all but essential travel to North Korea after reports its borders will reopen to tourists.
Beijing-based Koryo Tours said it had received confirmation the hermit kingdom would swing open its doors to foreigners for the first time since 2020.
The firm said international tourists would be able to visit the Samjiyon area from December, with dates and itineraries expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
The Express understands the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) is keeping its travel advice under constant review following the news.
But its advice currently remains the same, with people urged not to visit the country unless they absolutely have to.
Current incidents and risks listed on its website, which was last updated in August 2023, include a lack of consular support and constant nuclear testing by leader Kim Jong Un.
“The level of tension on the Korean peninsula has remained high since 2017 when North Korea began a series of nuclear and missile tests,” it says.
“Testing of ballistic missiles has taken place frequently since 2019.”
The British Government is thought to welcome moves by North Korea to reopen the border. While it is yet to change its current advice, officials are also expected to encourage the country to “facilitate the return of the wider international community”.
The December reopening would be the first time foreigners have been allowed in since being shut out during the pandemic.
Koryo Tours said it even hoped to offer a trip to Pyongyang and other areas of the country in August 2025.
Bosses at the travel firm explained that while the opening of Samjiyon City first might seem unusual, this was the most famous region in North Korea for winter tourism.
The area is home to the famous Mt. Paektu volcanic mountain which is the highest peak in Korea. Sky News has reported Kim wants to build a “socialist utopia” in the Chinese-border city.
But Koryo Tours added the first trips there could be eventful.
“For those hoping to visit on one of the sooner tours, we would like to emphasise that things may be a little more chaotic than usual,” the company added.
“But of course, you will be in the safe hands of the North Korea tour experts here at Koryo Tours. Your safety is our priority.”
