Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it from one of the world’s best airlines, two of which are based in the UK? After an awards ceremony last night (June 24), you’ll be able to answer that question with ease.

We’re sure we don’t need to remind you that yesterday was the 2024 edition of the Skytrax Aviation Awards, AKA the ‘Oscars of aviation’. The big award of the night, the ‘best picture’ for aeroplanes if you will, was ‘airline of the year’, and two British airlines made it big.

British Airways (BA) and Virgin Atlantic both triumphed, making it into 13th and 17th place respectively. Sure, it isn’t first and second, but that’s out of 100, so it’s still pretty impressive. Both are rated as four-star by Skytrax, and both commended for their excellent staff service ratings and onboard product offerings.

BA also took home the trophy for world’s most family friendly airline, so if you’re ever travelling with kids it’s the way to go.

Qatar Airlines came first, which is unsurprising for those who have been following the awards for a few years. In second place was last year’s winner Singapore Airlines, followed by Emirates. You can see the full list of winners on the Skytrax website here
