Britain is best known for its comfort food classics. Pies ‘n mash, fish ‘n chips, hearty roasts… that sort of stuff. But Blighty is also known for our refined options, too, from high tea rituals to Michelin-starred eateries – and now one of the country’s fine dining restos has picked up a prestigious global award.

In the 2024 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards, online reviewers wielded their fearsome power to name one British eatery among the best in the world. Northcote Restaurant in Langho, Lancashire, came third in the ‘fine dining’ category.

Two other British eateries cracked the top 20. The Old Stamp House in the Lake District – which also got a mention last year – and the Tudor Pass in Surrey claimed 16th and 17th place respectively.

Northcote is the in-house restaurant of a Stafford Collection hotel, and has held onto its Michelin star since 1996. Reviewers praise the restaurant for maintaining a relaxed vibe around its inventive tasting menu, which has been spearheaded by Executive Chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen for the past two decades. Northcote is especially serious about produce, sourcing ingredients from its own kitchen garden and local growers.

Three-course set menus at Northcote start at £49.50 and, as far as TripAdvisor reviewers are concerned, it’s worth it. According to one commenter said: ‘Right from the moment we walked in we were treated like a cross between royalty and old friends.’
