An incredible 1,200-mile Thailand train journey passes through three countries all year round.

The Bangkok to Singapore train is a regularly scheduled service, not sold as a tour or package holiday. It runs daily, year-round.

Passengers can travel northbound or southbound and can stop off where they like for as long as they like. The whole 1,200-mile journey takes 48 hours and costs as little as £55.

Travellers must go from Singapore to Johor Bahru, then to Gemas, Kuala Lumpur, Padang Besar and on to Bangkok on five trains.

Some of the trains are shorter stints while others include overnight journeys. As they are normal trains for local travel there are only sometimes amenities.

Starting off in Singapore, tourists can visit the former British command post-Battlebox Museum, Gardens by the Bay botanical Gardens, Singapore Zoo, the National Gallery, and the MacRitchie Reservoir.

In Johor Bahru are the Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Temple, the Old Chinese Temple, the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque, and the Royal Abu Bakar Museum.

Gemas is a small town with little to do. It is the main hub of Malaysia’s rail network. Some stay a few hours or even overnight waiting for trains.

In Kuala Lumpur are Petronas Towers, KLCC Park, Wet Market Bazaar Baru Chow Kit and Badan Warisan Malaysia.

Padang Besar has attractions including the Adityawarman Museum, the Colonial Quarter, Kilim Geoforest, Langkawi Wildlife Park and Underwater World Langkawi.

The destination of Bangkok has the Grand Palace, Lumphini Park, Golden Mount, and a number of golden temples including Wat Pho, Wat Arun and Wat Phra Kaew.
