The top spot was taken by an Indonesian delicacy called Bawang goreng (more widely known as crispy fried onions or shallots), which is scarcely found in the UK.
The condiment is popular around the globe with it also seeing widespread appeal in the United States where it is sometimes used on hotdogs.
Taste Atlas called it the best condiment in the world and described Bawang goreng as a “traditional Indonesian condiment.”
The food website said: “It’s made by deep-frying thinly sliced shallots in oil until the shallots become crisp and golden. The flavour is described as bitter and savoury. Once prepared, this condiment is usually stored in airtight jars for later use.
“It’s sprinkled over various Indonesian dishes such as nasi goreng, chicken satay, bakso, semur, and sop buntut. Bawang goreng can be bought at most Indonesian supermarkets and grocery stores.”
I tried the world’s best condiment – here is what I thought
To undertake the taste test, I decided to compare Bawang goreng or crispy fried onions with my favourite condiment – Using hotdogs as the base food, I tried both side by side to get an idea of which one I liked better.

I was impressed with the condiment and thought its crunchy texture and more subtle and understated onion taste added greatly to the hotdog eating experience.
However, for me, ketchup came out on top with its stronger taste and smell packing more of a punch and complimenting the hotdog a lot.
While I did enjoy Bawang goreng or crispy fried onions, I wouldn’t go as far as to say that it is the best condiment in the world, still holding a special in my heart for a bit of ketchup or brown sauce.
