A historic Somerset pub has been named as one of the best in the country.
The George Inn in Norton St Philip has been named 2024 Pub of the Year at this year’s National Pub & Bar Awards.
The inn, managed by Butcombe Pubs & Inns, won the prestigious accolade at an awards ceremony in London last week.
The National Pub & Bar Awards recognises excellence in the hospitality industry, taking into consideration customer service, design, style of offer, marketing and investment.
Linda Johnson, general manager of The George Inn said: “This is absolutely amazing, I’m so proud and so emotional. I’m just so passionate about my team, the company that supports us, and obviously The George Inn and what we’re all about.
“With our senior sous chef, Aimie Harley, recently being voted Pub Chef of the Year at the prestigious Salon Culinaire awards this really caps off what has been an amazing few months for The George Inn and all the team.”
The National Pub & Bar Awards judges said they were impressed with the immaculate venue, as well as the quality food and drink offer across all its menus.
The first inn to launch under the banner of Butcombe new premium rooms offering – Butcombe Boutique Inns – The George Inn, is an historic 14th century Grade I listed Tudor inn, located in the heart of Norton St. Philip, just outside of Bath.
Having recently undergone a full makeover and preservation project, The George offers beautiful décor and furnishings alongside many original features and antiques from the inn’s fascinating past. With a history dating back to 1397, The George is one of Britain’s oldest taverns.
Alice Bowyer, director of food, at Butcombe Pubs & Inns, said: “These guys really deserve it. It is the combination of the setting, the history of the building, the investment that we have put into the business and, most importantly, the team and family culture they’ve created there.”
