Hamilton Insurance Group has announced the appointment of Athena Tolosa (pictured above) as the new chief financial officer of Hamilton Re, the company’s Bermuda-based insurance and reinsurance underwriting division.

In this new role, Tolosa takes over from Chad Cundliffe, who has retired and plans to return to Canada with his family.

She has over 18 years of experience in the re/insurance sector prior to her new role. Most recently, Tolosa served as senior vice president, head of finance – reinsurance at RenaissanceRe, where she spent five years in senior positions.

Prior to her tenure at RenaissanceRe, she was at Tokio Millennium Re (now part of RenaissanceRe) for 11 years, holding various senior finance roles in Bermuda and Switzerland, with her final position being vice president, finance. Earlier in her career, she worked at EY in Bermuda and PwC in the Philippines. Tolosa is also a Certified Public Accountant.

Tolosa, who will be based in Bermuda, will report directly to Hamilton Re chief executive officer Megan Thomas and group chief accounting officer Brian Deegan.

“Athena’s appointment is an excellent addition to Hamilton and I look forward to working closely with her. She has an accomplished financial background with an impressive track record in the industry. Her experience and counsel will help to ensure our finance team pursues its key priorities in support of Hamilton Re’s continued success,” Thomas said.

“I’m pleased to welcome someone of Athena’s caliber to the Hamilton team. She will play a key role in the leadership of our global finance team,” Deegan said.

With regards to her processor, Thomas also expressed appreciation for the exiting Cundliffe’s contributions to the company.

“We are grateful for Chad’s contributions during his over nine years with Hamilton. We respect his decision to move home to Canada with his family and wish him all the best,” Thomas said.
