Pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has confirmed job losses at one of its UK sites.
It is believed about 200 roles will be cut at the facility in Barnard Castle, County Durham, in October 2025.
The team affected has been producing the antibiotic Zinnat for the Swiss-owned firm Sandoz.
GSK said the vast majority of its staff at Barnard Castle were unaffected and that its first priority was to provide “comprehensive support” for those impacted.
The firm had said in 2021 that its Zinnat operations would be terminated when its contract with Sandoz ended “in the absence of any other alternative”.
It has now confirmed Sandoz has decided not to renew its contract.
The move comes as GSK confirmed it was shutting its site at Ulverston, Cumbria, which has also been producing the antibiotic for Sandoz.
A GSK spokesperson said Barnard Castle remained a key location where it manufactured some of its most “innovative medicines”.
