A global tech outage has sparked flight and rail chaos. Major banks and media organisations have also been affected.

Downdetector, a website which provides realtime reports of outages, showed spikes in issues with websites including Microsoft applications, banking websites and airline apps.

Ryanair has warned of “potential disruptions across the network” due to a global third party system outage.

Sky News is among the broadcasters impacted. It has been off air online, with viewers who attempt to tune into the channel shown an apology instead of usual programming.

On Friday morning, a statement on their online page, YouTube and TV channel says: “We apologise for the interruption to this broadcast.

“We hope to restore the transmission of Sky News shortly.”
