The suspected gunman who opened fire at a Georgia high school, killing four people, had previously fallen on the radar of law enforcement for allegedly threatening to carry out a school shooting, it has been revealed.
Colt Gray, 14, was quizzed by police in May 2023 over internet posts that contained images of guns, the FBI said.
Gray allegedly denied being behind the posts while his father said that there was hunting guns in the family home – but that his son, then 13, did not have unsupervised access to them.
Now, one year on, Gray is accused of carrying out a mass shooting using an AR-style rifle at his school Apalachee High School in the city of Winder.
Two teachers – Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie – and two students – Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14 – died in the attack, according to GBI.
Police said that Gray was arrested on the scene and will be prosecuted as an adult.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith described the incident on Wednesday as “evil” but vowed that “hate will not prevail in this county.”

Student who sat next to Georgia shooting suspect reveals moment first round went off
On Wednesday morning Apalachee High School student Lyela Sayarath, 16, said she was in algebra class sat next to Colt Gray.
Hours later, Gray, the suspected gunman, allegedly opened fire on students and staff at the Winder, Georgia institution, killing four people and injuring a further nine.
“He was at the door and they almost let him in, until they backed up,” Sayarath told CNN describing the moments as gunfire began ringing out. “And then he turned away and that’s when you hear the first round of fire.”
She explained that their classroom doors lock automatically when closed, and when the suspected gunman couldn’t get back in, Gray allegedly set his sights on a neighboring classroom and began opening fire, Sayarath claimed.
“You hear about 10-15 rounds back to back,” she said. “As soon as they didn’t let him in, and you hear the gunshots, you kind of know.”
Students were said to have dropped to the floor and piled together. The teacher switched off the lights in order to obscure the alleged shooter’s visibility, Sayarath added.
