“At FlightHub, we believe in uncovering the stories and connections behind the numbers,” says Henri Chelhot, CEO of FlightHub. “These lists are our way of offering more than just raw data; it’s about providing a deeper understanding of travel behaviours that can truly inform and inspire our industry.”
Hot vs. Not Destinations
The Unveiled lists highlight key travel trends for 2024. Taipei, Taiwan emerges as the breakout destination of the year, with an impressive 88 per cent increase in bookings, signalling its rising popularity. Manila, Philippines tops the list as the Hotspot Destination, attracting the highest number of bookings due to its growing appeal.
Conversely, Mexico City has dropped by 10 per cent in bookings and is no longer in the top 10, while Tehran, Iran has experienced the highest number of cancellations.
Generations are Redefining Top Travel Spots
Generational preferences are adding vibrant hues to travel trends, revealing distinct and exciting choices for each group:
- Biarritz, France has become the top choice for women’s trips, with 88 per cent of bookings made by female travellers.
- São Jorge Island, Portugal is a favourite among men, with 76 per cent of bookings driven by its adventurous appeal.
For Baby Boomers, London, England remains a timeless destination, known for its blend of history, culture, and charm. Tokyo, Japan leads as the top pick for Gen Z, celebrated for its vibrant street culture and electrifying nightlife. Meanwhile, Istanbul, Turkey stands out as the ideal destination for solo travellers seeking diverse and rich experiences.
Additional Scoop on Travel Trends
These lists also highlight notable consumer behaviour patterns:
- August is identified as the busiest travel month, with 10 per cent of travelers choosing to fly during this time. This surge in travel reflects the summer vacation season’s influence on booking trends.
- Tuesday emerges as the most popular booking day, accounting for 16 per cent of all bookings. This trend underscores the mid-week peak in planning and purchasing flights.
- Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) holds the title of the most booked airport, with Cancun (CUN) leading as the most insured destination, securing 16 per cent of insured bookings.
These insights reveal that travel patterns are significantly influenced by seasonal peaks, booking habits, and major travel hubs.
