Whilst there are many routes that tourists can take across Malta, the majority begin in the capital of Valletta, a World Heritage Site with a history that spans back to the 16th Century.

When visiting the city, most tourists enjoy taking a trip to St John’s Co-Cathedral to see its classic Baroque architecture and pieces of artwork by Caravaggio.

Those interested in more recent history can also consider the Lascaris War Rooms, a museum dedicated to the vast network of tunnels and offices used to defend the country during World War Two.

However, Skyscanner noted that there are many other destinations that tourists can explore whilst on a road trip, with many holidaymakers recommending Paola.

Around 15 minutes away from Valletta, this small town is home to the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, a staggering underground cemetery that was first used in around 4,000 BC.

Food lovers can also enjoy Paola’s famous pastizzi, the local take on the UK pastry, which can be found at many bakeries and cafes.

Wherever tourists wish to go on a road trip, Laura highlighted that they are able to save money by collecting and dropping off the vehicle at the same destination.

She advised: “It’s usually cheaper to drop your hire car off in the same place you picked it up. This is because the supplier will need to get it back to its original location.

“That means it’s more cost-effective to plan your road trip as a round trip beginning and starting in the same location.”
