If your children or grandchildren are fascinated with history, whether it’s Vikings, Knights or the Jacobites, there’s a spot not too far from Glasgow that will truly spark their interest.

Duncarron, located in the Carron Valley near Denny, is an authentic medieval village and wooden fort.

It has been featured in TV and film and is designed to be a realistic recreation of a Scottish fortress and village from the 12th Century.

Since 2019, this attraction has been open for guided tours and living history events, and it recently opened its doors daily for self-guided tours.

The accurately reconstructed medieval environment is perfect for educating about the era, and due to its precise build and design, it has been used as one of the local filming locations for the hit show Outlander.

In addition to regular tours, the introduction of self-guided tours means visitors can now explore over 35 different points of interest throughout the site at their leisure, reports Glasgow Live.

Not only has Duncarron featured in films and served as the setting for amateur productions and reenactments, but it also houses props and sets from films like Outlaw King.

A tower at the fortress has been named after Russell Crowe, in recognition of the Gladiator star’s support of the project. He donated a life-sized prop of a battering ram which now resides in the fortress.

The Clanranald Trust has nurtured a passionate project, built entirely through volunteer assistance and self-fundraising efforts, that continues to flourish.

Its stunning construction is based on a conventional motte and bailey design, fortifying a village within a wooden palisade.

This location breathes life into history, making it an unmissable experience for avid historians, TV shows and movie enthusiasts.

Now providing the public with independent tours from 10am to 3pm, along with Outlander tours, the spot also hosts a line of events, such as the forthcoming ‘Forces in the Field’ set to take place next month. Anticipate a grand affair with axe throwing contests, archery sessions, re-enactments, food markets, live music performances, and scores of children’s activities.

Sharing details about the occasion, the team penned: “Step into a time machine this August at Duncarron Medieval Village! Brace yourself for ancient artefacts, medieval crafts, live shows, and epic tales that will transport you back in time! Join forces with Picts, Pirates, Romans, Red Coats, Vikings, Crusaders, Jacobites, and more for a historical adventure like no other!”

Dogs are warmly welcomed when leashed, allowing the entire family to partake in the merriment.
