Applications have opened for six new community reporter roles after the NCTJ rescued the funding for the project.

As previously reported, the training body stepped in to establish new funding for the Community News Project after Facebook owner Meta pulled the plug on it last year.

It has now opened applications for the initial six roles with the aim of further promoting diversity within UK newsrooms.

The NCTJ has designated £450,000 from its reserves to support the new community reporting fund, with a goal of securing additional funding from external partners in the coming years.

The project is aimed at individuals from diverse backgrounds who have not previously had the opportunity to undertake professional journalism education or training or work as journalists.

As well as generating stories in their areas and building relationships with local communities, the new cohort will also receive specialised training in combating misinformation.

Will Gore, head of projects and partnerships at the NCTJ, said: “The Community News Project has been transformative to local journalism by bringing underreported stories to light and opening doors to those who may not have had the opportunity to train as journalists otherwise.

“We are thrilled to see the project continue, and we look forward to receiving applications from those who are passionate about community-focussed journalism. These new reporters will play a vital role in connecting with their communities and highlighting perspectives that are often underrepresented.”

In a shift from the previous phase of the CNP, the NCTJ is managing the recruitment process for the new roles although final appointments will be made in collaboration with publishers.

Reporters will join newsrooms across the UK on two-year contracts, where they will gain hands-on experience while studying towards the NCTJ’s Diploma in Journalism.

Candidates can now apply directly for roles via the NCTJ website.

The deadline for entries is Monday, 2 December.
