Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fights for the first time this year as he takes on fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia in Las Vegas on Cinco de Mayo weekend with the ring walk expected at 4am BST on Sunday.

Canelo is defending his four super middleweight titles, while Munguia has an unbeaten record and is a former super welterweight world champion.

Champion should be too slick for challenger

Canelo is fighting for the 65th time as a professional this weekend. While it has been suggested he is perhaps on the decline, he remains one of the most technically gifted active fighters and should be able to work out a way to beat Munguia.

The Mexican superstar only loses to the very best, with his two defeats coming at the hands of the legendary Floyd Mayweather and when attempting to win another title at light heavyweight against another superb technician in Dimitrii Bivol.

Munguia should not be underestimated here and the 43-0 fighter from Tijuana has earned this shot. His aggressive, all-action style could well cause Canelo a few problems, particularly early on, but the undisputed super middleweight champion has the class and experience to ultimately win comfortably, even if he is given a few scares along the way by a game challenger.

Canelo’s defensive skill set is unrivalled in this weight class and it is hard to see Munguia landing enough to convince the judges to give him a shock win. Canelo’s previous three wins have all been by unanimous decision and his past five points victories have all been unanimous, so the standout bet here looks to be backing all the judges to score this one in his favour.

Canelo could come off the canvas to win

While Canelo has never been knocked down as a professional, there is a first time for everything – and Munguia has the style and power to make a few inroads against his compatriot.

The challenger is an aggressive fighter who likes to box on the front foot, but he also moves well and will come in and out of range while attempting to land punches. Bivol enjoyed great success against Canelo adopting similar tactics (admittedly without scoring a knockdown) and Munguia will look to replicate that kind of performance.

Ultimately, Canelo probably has too much quality and experience to be on the wrong end of an upset but Munguia may enjoy a bit of early success while his opponent tries to work out his style and set the pace.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Munguia could score a knockdown but still lose, and this option should be of interest to anyone looking for a big-price way to back Canelo to pick up a victory.
