It’s a new era in UK politics after Labour took victory in the general election last week. Keir Starmer’s party defeated Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives, securing 412 seats and the largest majority government in 25 years.

The UK gambling industry has been quick to welcome in the new government. The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) – which represents UK operators – published a statement to its website to mark the occasion. The group said it is “committed to working with the new government to deliver a world class betting and gaming industry.”

The release also held Labour to account for promises made in its manifesto, primarily the party’s pledge to work with the industry to “drive up standards on responsible gambling.” In the past few years, Starmer and other high-ranking Labour MPs have made clear their belief in the need for tightening of gambling regulation.
The BGC also noted that it is committed to “delivering the evidence based, proportionate proposals contained in the white paper.” The Conservatives introduced a number of possible reforms to gambling regulation in the white paper, including stake limits for online slots. They are currently undergoing a consultation process.
