The European Best Destinations votes are based on over a million travelers, looking at factors including where has the most natural beauty that’s easily accessible, villages and towns lost in time and picture-perfect scenery set away from the crowds.

The winner of the prestigious title of The Best Hidden Gem in Europe 2024 went to Villajoyosa in the south of the Valencian Community in Spain and means ‘The Joyful Town’.

Known locally as La Vila, Villajoyosa is located 32 km from Alicante on Spain’s Northern Costa Blanca shoreline.

Sandwiched between San Juan and Benidorm, the town offers a mild Mediterranean climate and a feast for the eyes.

Summer in Villajoyosa ranges between 28C and 34C while in winter temperatures rarely drop below 5 C with little rainfall.

You’ll be spoiled for activities in this charming town including a stroll through the Old Town with narrow streets, colourful fisherman houses and traditional architecture throughout.

For the beach lovers, Playa Centro is the most popular spot for bathing and suntanning.

The town’s harbour and promenade offers endless views of the Mediterranean sea with an array of seafood restaurants offering the ultimate Spanish cuisine.

Expect a mix of Spanish flavours and fresh seafood providing a sublime gastronomical delight.

What makes this town even sweeter, is the Chocolate Valor museum where you can discover the journey of cocoa in the region and how they make their mouth-watering chocolate.

Other activities in Villajoyosa include kayaking, horseback riding, coasteering and canyon-hiking.
