Elizabeth line passengers face severe disruption on journeys between Paddington and Heathrow Airport after a track fault.

While Network Rail engineers are monitoring the fault, issues are expected to last until the end of the day.

Elsewhere on the London Underground, a stretch of the Piccadilly line is suspended between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge due to ‘poor rail conditions caused by falling leaves.’

In other traffic news, the M5 was closed in both directions in Somerset after a 17-year-old girl was killed in a crash. She was hit by a car on the motorway after getting out of the back of a police car.

Update from Network Rail after broken rail on Paddington line

A broken track was spotted between London Paddington and Heathrow Terminals this morning.

It is forcing trains to run slower than usual which is having a knock-on effect on Elizabeth line, Heathrow Express and Great Western Railway services.

How did the track fault happen?

Network Rail engineers found the defect on the high speed section of the line towards London Paddington during routine checks.

Network Rail said it will monitor the broken rail throughout the day ‘to ensure trains continue to travel safely’ until it can be replaced.

It also apologised to passengers for the disruption.

More applications open for Oyster Photocards after TfL cyber attack

TfL is now accepting applications for 60+ London Oyster Photocards following the cyber attack in early September which hit TfL’s digital services.

Last week, applications opened for the 18+ Photocards, Apprentice and 18-25 Care Leavers photocards.

Once customers have applied for a new photocard, the remaining credit on expired Zip photocards can be transferred to new photocards by contacting TfL customer service.

Passengers should also keep a record of fares they should be refunded.

Only after new photocards have been issued can TfL tell customers how they can apply for refunds for any additional travel costs incurred while not being able to apply for a photocard.

Train delays after incident at Rugeley

London Northwestern Railway services face delays and cancellations after an incident at Rugeley, Staffordshire.

The operator said emergency services are dealing with an incident and trains could be disrupted.

Plan for station displays showing passengers how services are working

If you have ever been caught in train delays, the uncertainty can be frustrating.

But soon passengers could be able to check how services are working on a live departure-style board at stations.

It comes after the Transport Secretary Louise Haigh said the move will help ‘to hold us to account’ after inheriting a railway that was ‘failing its passengers.’

While she said there are ‘early signs’ of improvement across operators such as LNER, Northern Rail and TransPennine Express, Haigh added that it will ‘take time to pass all the benefits on to passengers.’

She criticised the previous government, accusing it of allowing service cancellations to reach a ’10-year high.’

The government continues with the move to bring back train operations under public ownership.

The Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Bill is expected to pass through the Parliament in the coming weeks.

It means a public sector train operator could be appointed to run services as the default option rather than a last resort.

How long will issues last on the Elizabeth line, GWR and Heathrow Express?

If you’re travelling to and from Heathrow Airport, you might want to consider using alternative services after major disruption on the route.

There are two issues affecting Elizabeth line, Great Western Railway and Heathrow Express services – a broken rail and shortage of signalling staff after illness.

This means fewer trains can run on some of the lines.

The broken rail could cause disruption until the end of the day, with cancellations, delays or revisions on services. Network Rail engineers continue to monitor the defect which was spotted on the high speed line towards Paddington.

Here is a recap of the affected routes.

  • Elizabeth line services between Abbey Wood and Heathrow Terminal 4 / Maidenhead / Reading, and also between London Paddington / Shenfield and Heathrow Terminal 5
  • Great Western Railway services to / from London Paddington
  • Heathrow Express services between London Paddington and Heathrow Terminal 5

What other services are there to the airport?

Passengers can use their tickets on London Buses and the London Underground via any reasonable route. Piccadilly line runs between central London and Heathrow.

Passengers travelling between Reading and Waterloo can use South Western Railway services.
