Wonka has become the biggest selling home entertainment movie of 2024 in the UK, according to the British Association For Screen Entertainment (Base).

The film, starring Oscar-nominated actor Timothee Chalamet, serves as an origin story for the quirky Willy Wonka character featured in Roald Dahl novel Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.

The Warner Bros-distributed movie, directed by Paul King, was the number one film at the new year’s weekend US box office in 2023, following its theatrical December release.

Over the course of the past year it raked in 821,000 sales and rental units, across digital and disc, in the UK, according to the Official Charts Company (OCC).

Science fiction film Dune: Part Two, also starring Chalamet, was the top-selling title on disc, moving 132,000 copies on Blu-ray and DVD, and took the second spot in the combined disc and digital chart, selling 817,000 units overall.

Elsewhere, Sir Christopher Nolan-directed historical epic Oppenheimer, which had total sales of 697,000, came in at number three on the list of the top five biggest home entertainment movies of 2024.

The film, starring Irish actor Cillian Murphy as “the father of the atomic bomb”, won a host of awards in 2024 including the best picture Oscar.

The rest of this year’s top five was comprised of action film Deadpool And Wolverine and fantasy comedy movie Barbie.
