As winter grips the UK, gardeners might be tempted to set their tools aside, but experts warn there are four crucial jobs to complete before Christmas to ensure a flourishing spring display.

Elise Harlock, brand manager at Prestige Flowers, has shared her top winter gardening tips, emphasizing that preparation now will yield stunning results next year.

“A little effort in winter goes a long way,” she advised, outlining essential tasks to protect and rejuvenate gardens.

1. Soil Preparation

Healthy soil is the backbone of a successful garden.

Elise recommends adding a “generous layer of organic matter, such as compost, well-rotted manure, or leaf mould,” to boost nutrients and insulate the soil against winter’s chill. This step creates a strong foundation for plants to thrive in spring.

2. Pruning Plants

Pruning is vital to encourage healthy growth.

“Cut back perennials, roses, and fruit trees to remove dead or diseased wood and shape plants for the new growing season,” Elise suggested.

Using clean, sharp tools is crucial to avoid spreading plant diseases, making this task both a maintenance and preventative measure.

3. Tool and Structure Maintenance

Winter is the perfect time to inspect and care for gardening tools and structures.

Clean, sharpen, and oil tools before storing them to prevent rust. Additionally, repair any damage to trellises or fences now to avoid further deterioration during the harsher months.

4. Planting Bulbs for Spring

Finally, planning for spring blooms is a must.

Elise recommends planting daffodils, tulips, crocuses, and hyacinths at a depth two to three times the bulb’s height.

“Group them in clusters for a natural and striking effect,” she advised, ensuring a vibrant display when warmer weather returns.

By tackling these tasks, gardeners can look forward to lush, healthy growth when spring arrives.

“Taking the time to prepare your garden now will reward you with vibrant growth and beautiful blooms,” Elise said.
