The UK Government is urged by 174 business groups, representing 104,000 businesses, to support Gatwick’s Northern Runway plans for economic growth and job creation.

In a powerful show of support, 174 business groups representing more than 104,000 businesses have urged the UK Government to back London Gatwick’s Northern Runway plans, citing the potential for significant economic growth, job creation, and infrastructure development. The call comes from influential industry leaders, including the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and the Gatwick Diamond Initiative, both of which have separately written to the Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander, advocating for the approval of the project.

The proposed Northern Runway expansion has been described as a crucial step for the region’s economy, one that aligns closely with the UK Labour Party’s ambitions to foster economic growth and job creation. If given the green light, the Northern Runway would be transformed from its current status as a backup runway into a fully operational second permanent runway, offering immense potential for both the local and national economy.

The Economic Impact of Gatwick’s Northern Runway

The Northern Runway project is a £2.2 billion shovel-ready investment that is privately financed, meaning there would be no cost to the taxpayer. With the potential to become operational by the end of the decade, the project promises to have far-reaching impacts on the UK economy, specifically in the South East. According to industry leaders, the Northern Runway could create up to 14,000 new jobs and generate an estimated £1 billion in economic benefits annually. These numbers underscore the substantial economic potential of the project, both in terms of direct job creation and broader economic activity in the region.

Brett North, Chair of the Gatwick Diamond Initiative, said: “We are pleased that even more business groups and their members have confirmed their support for this crucial infrastructure project. But we aren’t surprised. London Gatwick’s Northern Runway is a vital step for the South East economy and beyond. It will drive growth, create jobs, and ensure the region remains competitive. This investment reflects London Gatwick’s dedication to strengthening local and national economic resilience.

“The initiative also aligns with the UK Labour Party’s manifesto commitments to economic growth and collaboration with businesses, alongside the Government’s support for airport expansions that balance economic and environmental objectives. Better still, there is no burden on the taxpayer.”

Alignment with Labour’s Growth Strategy

The Northern Runway expansion also aligns with the UK Labour Party’s manifesto, which focuses on unlocking economic growth, boosting job creation, and investing in infrastructure to support a thriving economy. The Labour Party has long championed initiatives that provide a balanced approach to economic development, including those that improve the UK’s infrastructure while considering environmental objectives.

As such, the Gatwick expansion project fits well within Labour’s broader economic strategy, which emphasizes sustainable growth and collaboration with businesses across sectors. The expansion would support both the government’s and Labour’s goals of strengthening economic resilience while enhancing the UK’s standing as a global business and travel hub.

Strategic Importance for the UK’s Aviation Sector

London Gatwick is one of the UK’s most critical airports, serving as a key international gateway and a vital hub for business and tourism. Its position within the South East of England also places it at the heart of the UK’s aviation infrastructure, making it essential for maintaining the region’s competitiveness on the global stage. The Northern Runway expansion will not only bolster Gatwick’s capacity to serve an increasing number of passengers but also support broader economic goals for the country as a whole.

The UK’s aviation sector has long been a driver of economic activity, contributing significantly to employment and economic output. However, with the increasing demand for air travel, there is a pressing need to enhance the capacity of the nation’s airports. By adding an additional runway, London Gatwick will be better positioned to meet these demands, further cementing its role in the UK’s aviation infrastructure.

Job Creation and Economic Benefits

The creation of 14,000 new jobs is one of the key selling points of the Northern Runway expansion. In addition to direct employment opportunities at the airport, the project is expected to have a knock-on effect on local businesses and industries in the surrounding areas, further driving regional economic growth. These jobs will range from construction roles to permanent positions within aviation and hospitality, as well as ancillary services that support the airport’s operations.

Moreover, the £1 billion in annual economic benefits will not only be a direct result of airport activities but will also extend to local businesses in the area, from retail to transport, hospitality, and logistics. The increased connectivity provided by a second operational runway will also improve international trade, creating new opportunities for UK businesses to expand their reach globally.

A Shovel-Ready, Privately Financed Investment

Another key factor in the project’s favor is its status as a shovel-ready, privately financed investment. The project would not place any financial burden on the taxpayer, as it will be funded entirely by private investment. This aspect makes the expansion a particularly attractive option for the government, as it would not require public funds, yet still offers substantial economic returns in the form of job creation, tax revenue, and infrastructure development.

The planning process for the Northern Runway has already passed a key milestone, with the Planning Inspectorate delivering its recommendation for approval. The government is expected to make a decision on the proposal early next year, with supporters hopeful that the project will receive the green light to proceed.

The Role of the Gatwick Diamond Initiative and LCCI

The Gatwick Diamond Initiative and the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) have played a significant role in garnering support for the Northern Runway project. Both organizations represent a wide range of businesses across the South East, and their backing lends significant weight to the argument that the runway expansion is vital for the region’s continued economic prosperity.

Karim Fatehi MBE, Chief Executive, London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), said: “London’s status as the world’s pre-eminent global city for business, tourism and trade is heavily reliant on the strength of the capital’s transport network. The aviation sector is vital to both London and the UK’s economy as it enables the flow of people, trade, and investment, across the entire country. Without robust aviation links, London risks losing its competitive edge on the international stage.”

The LCCI, which represents businesses in London and surrounding areas, sees the Northern Runway expansion as a key factor in the long-term economic resilience of the capital. For both organizations, supporting this project is about securing the future of the region and ensuring that it remains a vibrant and competitive economic center in the years to come.

The call from 174 business groups for the UK government to support the Northern Runway expansion at London Gatwick is a powerful endorsement of the project’s potential to drive economic growth, job creation, and infrastructure development. The expansion aligns closely with the UK Labour Party’s economic goals, presenting a win-win scenario for both the business community and the broader economy.

With its £2.2 billion price tag, privately financed structure, and the promise of 14,000 new jobs, the Northern Runway plan represents a strategic investment in the UK’s future. If approved, it will serve as a crucial step in ensuring that London Gatwick remains a world-class airport and a key economic engine for the South East and the entire country.

As the decision-making process moves forward, all eyes will be on the government’s response, with business leaders hoping that the project will receive the green light to proceed and unlock the full economic potential of London Gatwick’s Northern Runway.
