The family of the Elizabeth line worker who was killed after an attack at an east London station have paid tribute to ‘a most loving dad’.

Jorge Ortega suffered significant head injuries at Ilford station shortly before 9pm on Wednesday.

The 61-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious but later died.

In a tribute released through British Transport Police, his son said: ‘Our dad was the most loving person, the kindest soul you could have the pleasure of meeting.

‘Everyone who has met our dad or who has ever worked with him over the years will tell you this. He had a brilliant mind, enjoyed cooking, loved drawing, and was highly skilled in art.

‘He was an amazing family man and would always put other people first. He loved his grandchildren, and in turn, they adored our dad.

British Transport Police Investigate Serious Attack on Staff Member at Ilford Station A serious investigation has been launched by British Transport Police (BTP) following a violent attack on a staff member at Ilford Station late on Thursday night. The incident has led to the closure of the station platform, with forensic teams gathering evidence at the scene. Emergency services, including paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and crews from the London Fire Brigade, were dispatched to support police officers after reports of the assault. The staff member sustained significant injuries and was treated at the scene before being transported to the hospital. The platform remains cordoned off as forensic officers, dressed in white suits, meticulously comb the area for evidence to aid in securing an arrest. The RMT union said the victim was one of its members and worked as a customer experience assistant for MTREL, which runs the Elizabeth Line.

Ayodele Jamgbadi, of Ilford, appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

He is charged with grievous bodily harm, affray and possession of a prohibited offensive weapon in a private place and was remanded to appear at Inner London Crown Court on January 7.

British Transport Police said detectives would apply to amend the indictment to reflect the death of the victim.

Photos taken shortly after the incident show the platform cordoned off as forensics dressed in white suits combed the area for evidence.

Superintendent Nick Sedgemore said: ‘There is absolutely no place for violence on the railway network.

‘We are working at pace on this investigation and supporting the family of the victim.’
