Amazon’s officially launched its 2024 Black Friday deals
Amazon has surprised Black Friday shoppers by launching its official 2024 Black Friday deals overnight, adding to its existing line of early bargains there are, yet again, more deals available to shop. We’ve been following the best price drops ahead of the November 29 date, to pick out the ones that are worth your money…and the ones that simply are not.
It’s not the only retailer to do so either, as tech rivals including Currys, Argos, Very, Samsung (and a whole lot more) also unveil their sales before the end of November date. The good news for shoppers is there are lots of options out there, the tricky part being it can be tricky to sound out all the ‘noise’ – so to help you find a genuinely good deal our resident tech team have done that for you.
Earlier this week our Tech Editors Dave Snelling and Henry Burrell picked ‘Six of the best early tech deals’ with items including the Google Pixel 8 Pro, FitBit Charge 6, the Echo Dot bundle (that’s been flying off the shelves), and Samsung’s budget Galaxy A35 mobile on the list. As Amazon come back with more today, heralding the start of what they’ve dubbed ‘Black Friday Week,’ we’re back with another expert-picked round-up.
So grab a cuppa, or take another look at your family’s Christmas list – here are the tech items in Amazon’s latest flurry of early Black Friday deals that we’d say are worth buying.
Echo Spot – Tech Editor Dave Snelling’s top pick
“The Echo Spot returned to homes earlier this year in a surprise reboot from Amazon. This latest bedside device now features a bigger screen, a neat design and a more impressive speaker. It has also ditched the creepy – and widely criticised – camera that was baked into the original Spot”, says Tech Editor Dave Snelling.
“I’ve been using the 2024 model since it launched and it’s now one of my favourite Echos in years. It looks good, the screen is really useful without being overbearing and it belts out sound with enough volume to fill a standard-sized room in your home.
It’s also powered by Alexa so you’ll get a useful response to questions and commands along with being able to control your smart home devices.
“At the full £79.99 asking price the Spot is tougher to fully recommend as there are much cheaper options such as the Dot and Pop but Amazon’s sale has now slashed that cost to under £50 making it a far more tempting purchase.”
New Amazon Kindle – Deputy Editor Henry Burrell’s choice
Amazon’s newest Kindle is at the top of our list
Henry Burrell said: “This Kindle has only just been released, so a £15 saving is great to see. £79.99 gets you a lightweight e-reader you can fit in a jacket pocket, with a front light for reading at night.
“It charges up quickly via USB-C and comes in either black or a rather fetching matcha green. There’s an option to pay £10 more to get a version without lockscreen ads, which we recommend. Even so, this is a superb Kindle for under £100.
“The only thing it’s missing compared to pricier Kindles is water resistance. With access to the huge Kindle store with millions of titles and 16GB storage you can carry your whole library around at a discount.”
43-inch Hisense TV – Our Commerce Editor Harriet Morphy-Morris’ pick
Over the last few weeks this 4K Hisense TV has flown in Amazons sale, and as it stands more than 1,000 shoppers have bought it this month alone. Overnight, it’s been discounted even further and it’s available for a cheaper £229.
Our Commerce Editor Harriet Morphy-Morris explains why it’s worth looking at, as she says: “This is one of the newest models to be launched in Hisense’s flashy 2024 TV range. With a mediocre 43-inch screen it’d be a perfect fit (size wise) in most compact city centre flats all without compromising on image quality.
“Its stand-out features can be found with its Freely link-up so you can catch up on all of your favourite live TV while tapping into on-demand streaming channels in a click of the remote. Youtube, Disney+, Netflix, and NowTV will also come locked and ready in this device so it’ll be a match for most homes.”
Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones – a popular pick
When rounding up our top recommended deals a few of us were quick to call out this Sony pair for being a good pick. As Henry Burrell and Christopher Harper recommended the noise-cancelling pair and they’re discounts from £379.99 to £247.
Both highlighting this high-end Sony model for its quality noise-blocking features and smart features, as Henry said: “The latest premium over-ear headphones from Sony are some of the best you can buy, and this price represents a significant saving.
“They have incredible noise cancellation that can block out aeroplane noise for peaceful travel as well as superior wireless sound quality and lengthy 30 hour battery life. They come with a protective carry case and charge up over USB-C, and have smart features so you can set them to change modes depending on your location or let sound in automatically when you start talking when in noise cancelling mode.”
While Chris picked them having owned a pair of the slightly older WH-1000XM4, as he said: “These earphones are some of the best on the market and despite them being expensive, these cans might be some of the best sounding with some amazing noise-cancellations.
“Having owned the previous XM4 headphones, these are a good pick if you’re in the market for some good, premium wireless headphones.”
55-inch Amazon Fire TV – a pick from our telly writer Jake Hackney
Amazon’s latest Fire TV price drop caught our eye
The Amazon Fire TV 55” Omni QLED series was previously priced at a mighty £749.99 but it’s now £419.
And here’s why our TV writer Jake says it’s one to look at, as he said: “This Amazon Fire TV is always a big seller any time Amazon has a sale on and the 55” model is now more than 44% off for Black Friday. lt boasts a 4K QLED display for watching TV or streaming with richer and more vivid colours than standard HD.
“It also has a built-in sensor that automatically adjusts the brightness depending on the lighting in your room so you always get the clearest image, as well as Alexa voice control so you can find specific shows and more without using the remote. While it won’t beat QLED models from the likes of Samsung, it’s not very often you can bag a QLED TV in this price range.”
Samsung’s Galaxy Tab A9+
It’s not the newest Samsung tablet, but we still think this model is a good buy
Samsung’s Galaxy Tab A9+ is now available to buy for £154.99, instead of the usual £239 price, a saving of 35%.
“This Samsung tablet boasts a high resolution, 11” screen and four Dolby Atmos-powered speakers, so it’s perfect for streaming the latest films and series. Its battery can run for up to 10 hours, while the Android software allows you to multitask with up to three apps open at once”, as our writer Jake highlights.
The Tab A9+ was released in November 2023 but still holds up well as a higher-end budget tablet. It’s a great option for shoppers in the market for a new device but don’t fancy forking out hundreds for the later models.
Garmin Fenix 7 Pro – A pick from tech expert Chris Hall
Garmin’s a high-end purchase but there’s still a saving to be had
“Garmin remains hugely popular and there’s nothing better than the Fenix line of watches. It’s big, it’s bold, it’s brash – and it’s incredibly smart”, say tech expert Chris Hall. The Garmin Fenix 7 Pro is now available with £75 cut off the price.
“A serious tracker, it will monitor all your exercise, your sleep and everything else, to give you a full picture of your health and wellbeing. Best of all, you’ll get more than 2 weeks of battery life. Down to £545, this is a great price for a great fitness watch”, as Chris recommends.
Samsung 990 Pro SSD – Our resident gamer Christopher Harper’s pick
This would help create extra space on a gaming console or PC
This won’t be on many shoppers’ lists, but if you’ve been looking for a way to up your PC storage then we just happen to have an option for you from Amazon’s sale. The Samsung 990 Pro SSD is now on offer, which you can buy here.
And it’s one our writer Christopher Harper says is ideal for gamers. As he said: “This SSD is a great price for PS5 or PC gamers who want to increase their storage for all the newest and best games coming out at the end of 2024.
“It’s an extremely speedy drive and comes with Samsung reliability. If you do want to add it to your PS5, make sure you buy a heatsink that you can attach to it.
It’s more than £60 off its usual price, taking it down to £129.99 although it’s the only deal on our list that’s a lightning deal. This means it comes with limited stock so if you’re considering it you shouldn’t wait too long – 6% of their allocation have already been sold at the time of writing.
