England vs Ireland preview

England needed a big performance against Greece on Thursday… and that’s exactly what they got.

Lee Carsley’s side entered the encounter surrounded by questions and doubts following their dismal and disjointed display in the reverse fixture at Wembley back in October.

But a youthful Three Lions comprehensively beat Ivan Jovanovic’s side 3-0 in Athens to leapfrog their opponents and put themselves in the driving seat for promotion.

England will now secure promotion to the top-tier of the Nations League with victory over the Republic of Ireland on Sunday, allowing incoming boss Thomas Tuchel to avoid a play-off.

And they’ll fancy their chances of claiming maximum points given they cruised to a 2-0 victory over Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side at the Aviva Stadium in September.

England finished that clash with an xG of 2.25 to their opponents’ 0.37, enjoyed over 70% possession and fired off nine shots on target to Ireland’s one.

Ireland, who are ranked 63rd in FIFA’s world rankings, have managed to clinch to wins in their last three outings – however both arrived against Finland.

Aside from bragging rights, the Boys in Green have very little to play for. They’ve already secured their League B status with pointless Finland rock-bottom of Group 2.

Win to Nil

England should claim a comfortable victory over the Republic of Ireland on Sunday, and they should do it with a clean sheet to boot.

Ireland haven’t scored against England in any of their last three meetings, while they’ve also blanked in FOUR of their last SIX away matches.

Goalscorer

Noni Madueke was electric against Greece on Thursday, and the Chelsea winger should keep his place in the starting XI this weekend.

He consistently made things happen for Lee Carsley’s side, including a neat assist when he charged into the box and squared the ball for Ollie Watkins’ opener.

He also had two efforts on goal and could well add to his tally of five goals in 13 appearances this season against the Irish at Wembley.
