Leeds based supermarket chain Asda is to cut almost 500 jobs including at its HQ in the city.

A total of 475 people are being made redundant over the next several months, as part of a restructuring process

It comes after the retail giant, which has over 1200 stores in the UK, reported a 2.2% fall in revenues excluding fuel sales in the second financial quarter of this year.

Asda’s market share in the UK recently slumped to around 13%, with other retailers making up ground.

A number of fixed term contractors working on an IT overhaul for the company will also leave in the coming weeks.

Hybrid working is also being scaled back, with employees to be expected to work from the office for at least three days a week.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Asda said: “This approach brings us in line with our competitors and the wider market, allowing us to build high-performing teams with a collaborative culture and respond to what our business needs the most. “

“The change is effective from January 2025 to allow time for all colleagues to make any necessary arrangements.”
