The ranking, which was brought together by The Times, contained farm shops across the country, including those in places like North Yorkshire and Somerset.

Introducing the list, the newspaper said: “What do you think of when it comes to British farm shops? Besides homemade pies, freshly-picked veg and family-run butcher counters and creameries, many have delis, smokehouses and cosy cafés attached.

“Some fancier farms have their own microbreweries or private swimming lakes to make the journey even more worth it. So, here’s where to head with your basket (or reusable tote bag) — empty stomachs recommended.”

Family-run farm shop in East Lothian named one of the best in the UK

Carfrae Farm Shop, near Garvald, was the only Scottish location named in The Times ranking.

Discussing the East Lothian farm shop, the publication said: “At the foot of the Lammermuir Hills, about 20 miles east of Edinburgh, you will find Carfrae Farm.

“The Gibson family have been at the farm since 1933 and their shop is in a converted, wind-powered barn and sells fresh Scottish produce, including rainbow trout from the nearby smokehouse, marmalade, honey and locally brewed ales and spirits.

“Light bites and hot drinks are available if you want to stop to enjoy views over the hills, or to warm up by the stove.”

The lovely spot is well-liked with users on Google Reviews giving it a 5/5 out of 57 ratings.

One user said: “A little gem out in the East Lothian countryside. Great farm shop with local produce and goodies.”

Another said: “Really lovely place to stop off whilst out cycling. Well stocked shop with excellent hot drinks & selection of cakes. I liked this place a lot.”

A third added: “Nice selection of items in the farm shop. The owners are very helpful and the fresh milk is very tasty!”
