Two fish and chip shops in Aberdeen that are located just five miles apart have both been shortlisted for the prestigious Takeaway of the Year award in the 2025 National Fish and Chip Awards.
The two nominees, Sea Salt + Sole in Dyce and Lows Traditional Fish & Chips at Berryden Business Park, have made it onto the list of 40 establishments up for the top prize.
Sea Salt + Sole is a favourite among locals and has received glowing reviews for its fresh and crispy fish.
One Google reviewer praised the shop for its “pleasant staff and very organised” setup, while another customer said that “the batter was crispy, and the haddock was nice and thick.”
The chippy’s onion rings were also a standout, described as “the best I’ve had at any chippie,” by one reviewer.

On the other hand, Lows Traditional Fish & Chips has received mixed reviews on Google, with some loyal customers praising its “excellent quality products” and “friendly members of staff.”
However, others noted issues with service and portion sizes. One regular customer commented: “The food is good, but the service can be hit or miss.”
Despite this, Lows has secured its place on the list, meaning that they must be doing something right.
The two Aberdeen fish and chip shops are just five miles apart from each other. It would take around 15 minutes to drive from one to the other.
Alternatively, for anyone who wishes to burn calories as they prepare to indulge in two portions of fish and chips from the two different shops, it takes less than two hours to walk.
The organisers of the awards said: “There’s a lot to running a successful chippie.”
They added that each finalist demonstrated “talent, expertise, and business acumen”.
Below is the full list of the 40 nominees for the National Fish and Chip Awards 2025. Only 10 of those will be invited to the final, which will take place in February 2025.
